Nissan Ariya drivers will soon have more places to charge up. As per the Japanese automaker in a press release, Nissan Ariya drivers will gain access to NACS-compatible Tesla Superchargers starting December 10, 2024.

The addition of Tesla’s expansive Supercharger Network effectively expands the NISSAN ENERGY Charge Network (NECN) by a notable margin.

What this means:

  • Securing network growth: The addition of NACS-compatible Tesla Superchargers means there are now more than 100,000 public chargers in the US and 25,000 in Canada for Nissan EV drivers.
  • Adapters on the way: To tap into this Tesla network, Nissan EV owners will need a North American Charging Standard (NACS) adapter kit, which costs $235 and can be ordered now at NissanUSA.com.
  • Looking ahead: Nissan plans to include NACS ports directly on their electric vehicles starting from 2025 for both the U.S. and Canadian markets.
  • MyNISSAN app: The MyNISSAN app will streamline the charging process for Ariya owners. The app lets users find available chargers, check their charging status, and pay for the session all in one place.

The NECN at a glance:

Nissan Ariya owners now have a variety of charging options in the United States and Canada:

  • US partnerships: Apart from Tesla’s Supercharger Network, the network collaborates with Electrify America, Shell Recharge, ChargePoint, and EVgo in the United States.
  • Canadian connections: Charging will also be available through ChargeHub, Shell Recharge, FLO, Chargepoint, Circuit Electrique, BC Hydro, and the IVY network in Canada.

Tesla’s previous premature Nissan NACS update:

Tesla teased the Supercharger Network’s support for Nissan electric vehicles in an update to its official NACS page last month. At the time, it appeared that Nissan Ariya owners were already granted access to NACS-compatible Superchargers. Nissan, however, clarified that the Ariya will be receiving access to NACS before the end of 2024.

Check out Nissan’s video on its NACS charger for Ariya owners below:

The Tesla Supercharger Network is already among the best in the market, but it is still getting better. This was highlighted recently in a comment from Tesla Director of Charging for North America Max de Zegher on social media platform X.

One of the best things about the Tesla Supercharger Network is its ease of use. This is true for Tesla owners, and it is equally true for drivers who operate EVs from automakers that have adopted the North American Charging Standard (NACS). The Supercharger Network’s integration with the Tesla App also makes charging very simple and easy.

And as per the Tesla executive, Tesla App version 4.39.0 pushes this convenience even further. With the update, users would be able to report issues with Superchargers at any time, even if their vehicles are not plugged in at all. While Tesla is already very proficient with its ability to detect Superchargers that are not performing well, de Zegher noted that there are still some areas for improvement when it comes to reporting on issues beyond a charger’s performance.

“With Tesla App version 4.39.0 or later, you can now report issues at any time, even when not charging. Through our telemetry, we already auto-detect charging performance issues, such as a post not working or slow charging. However, issues like snow that isn’t properly plowed, cracked post skins, vandalism, trash overflowing etc can now easily be reported, helping us fix it faster!” De Zegher wrote in his post

The Tesla executive’s comments ring true. Tesla Superchargers are vandalized or destroyed from time to time, and some owners have expressed disappointment about the cleanliness of some Supercharger sites, among others. By making user reports easier through the Tesla App, the company should be able to address Supercharger issues in a more timely manner, making the network even better than before.

Tesla customers in North America who take delivery of their vehicles this Q4 2024 are poised to get some incentives with their new car purchases. As per the electric vehicle maker, customers who purchase a Model S, Model X, Model 3, Model Y, or Cybertruck by the end of the year are eligible to receive three months of free Supercharging and Full Self-Driving (Supervised).

Tesla explained the incentive on its official North America website

“Customers who take delivery of a new Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y or Cybertruck by December 31, 2024 are eligible for three months of free Full Self-Driving (Supervised) and Supercharging. Offer cannot be postponed to a later time or transferred to any other account or vehicle. An alternative option will not be made available to those who purchase Full Self-Driving (Supervised). Used vehicles and business orders are excluded from this promotion,” Tesla wrote.

Credit: Tesla

With the incentive in place, it would appear that Tesla is still extremely serious about pushing its customers to experience the latest capabilities of FSD (Supervised). As could be seen in Tesla’s description of its Q4 2024 incentive, customers that do not purchase FSD with their vehicles actually stand to get more perks until the end of the year.

This is because customers who purchase FSD with their Model S3XY or Cybertruck would not receive three months of FSD (Supervised) access anymore, and no alternative would be provided. Interestingly enough, Tesla watchers also noted that similar incentives were offered previously, though only for inventory vehicles

By offering three months of free Supercharging and FSD (Supervised) access, Tesla is effectively giving its customers an opportunity to experience its vision for the future—one where people are able to conveniently and sustainably travel long distances while their vehicles do most of the driving work.

Tesla is set to launch the new V4 Cabinet starting in 2025, which will enable the fastest Supercharging speeds for both passenger vehicles and the Semi.

Tesla’s V4 Superchargers started rolling out in 2023, bringing 350 kW charging speeds and giving EV owners their most expedited experience yet.

However, the speeds were not largely improved from the V3 Supercharger, as the V4 was catered to higher-voltage architectures, which have not yet become as popular in EVs.

It did feature a streamlined pile design and larger cables, as the V4 was made to be the first Supercharger to truly cater to non-Tesla EVs.

The Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y can still “enjoy 250kW charge rates on V3 cabinet — charging up to 200 miles in 15 minutes,” Tesla said in an X post.

The V4 Cabinet will be the missing piece of the puzzle, bridging the gap for EVs that have a 400 to 1000V architecture that can support the fastest charging speeds.

This will bring supercharging speeds up to 500kW for cars and 1.2MW for the Tesla Semi, which is an unheard-of charging rate for all-electric trucks.

It is a far cry from the first Superchargers that Tesla opened back in 2012, which had speeds of just 90kW.

Tesla says the first V4 Cabinets will be open sometime next year, and permitting for these locations is already underway. Tesla did not announce where it would be active, nor if it would start in the United States or another market.

V4 Supercharger installations first started in Europe.

Charging has been a true focus of Tesla for a long time, and it is perhaps the biggest advantage that drivers of the company’s EVs have outside of tech and overall performance.

Now that more EV makers are gaining access to the Supercharging Network, it is obvious Tesla needs to update its stalls to cater to the variety of architectures out there, enabling an efficient and reliable charging experience for drivers of any electric car out on the market.

Tesla has added a nifty Supercharging feature for drivers who choose to haul or tow with their electric vehicles, and something others will undoubtedly appreciate.

Over the years, Tesla Superchargers have continued to expand. There are over 6,700 Supercharger locations globally and over 62,400 individual connectors, most of which are available to more EVs than just Teslas.

Because of Tesla’s new vehicles and the fact that non-Tesla EVs can charge at so many locations, stall designs that will make the charging experience easier for everyone are a necessity. This can be combatted with longer cables, bigger stalls, and other things.

However, there are EV drivers, now more than ever, with electric trucks entering the market from a variety of manufacturers that require even more space. Hauling and towing are activities that many do on a daily basis, so getting Superchargers with proper stalls to support them is a necessity, especially as EV adoption is increasing.

Now, Tesla is making it easier for these folks to know which Supercharger locations are most suitable for their vehicles and additional cargo.

Tesla working on buildout of pull-through Superchargers

Tesla is adding a new feature to its maps that will identify Supercharger locations that have trailer-compatible parking spaces. The spots will automatically appear if the vehicle is in Tow Mode.

Tesla’s Release Notes for the feature state (via Not a Tesla App):

“You can now see if a Supercharger has trailer-compatible spaces. Tap a Supercharger location pin on the map to see if it is trailer-friendly. If your vehicle is in Tow Mode, trailer-friendly Supercharger locations will appear at the top of the list.”

The change is a huge advantage for those who will be using the Teslas for hauling and towing.

Proper trip preparation and knowing at which Supercharger locations to stop for charging will save some of the pain and hassle of arriving at less-than-suitable locations that are tight or filled.

Tesla is planning to open a massive new 168-stall Supercharger in Central California, separate from the Harris Ranch charging location, which houses 98 charging stalls for electric vehicles.

The new station will be located off of I-5 at W. Jayne Avenue and will feature 168 total stalls, one of the largest, along with another Supercharger array in nearby Lost Hills, California, that has 164 stalls.

At first glance, it is evident that this is going to be massive, of course. But looking at the spots and stalls individually, there are a few things that catch the eye.

The first is the small number of pull-through stalls that are incredibly ideal for those who are hauling or pulling cargo with their vehicle.

Tesla working on buildout of pull-through Superchargers

Making pull-through spots was something we saw Tesla do at other Supercharger locations, and it was incredibly useful, especially as it kept these drivers from parking perpendicularly to the spots, taking up as many as five stalls at once to charge one car.

Additionally, we see a handful of solar half canopies in the blueprints for the stalls, hinting that some of the stalls could utilize solar energy and battery power. At one point, Elon Musk wanted all Tesla Superchargers to utilize only solar energy, but this has not come to fruition.

This massive Supercharger location will help bring more efficient charging in a heavily concentrated state to all EVs, not just Teslas.

Earlier this year, Tesla started opening its Superchargers to other EV makers, with several brands now able to access the most expansive EV charging network globally.

Last week, Volvo and Polestar both gained access to the Supercharger network.

Ford has started shipping a new adapter that will enable access to 17,800 Tesla Supercharger locations in the United States and Canada.

The new adapter is an effort by Ford to get adapters to customers in a more timely fashion.

Ford EV owners who are still waiting to receive a complimentary adapter can receive either this new Ford-branded Fast Charging Adapter or the existing approved adapter, which shipped earlier this year when the company’s EVs gained access to the Tesla Supercharger Network.

Ford confirmed to Teslarati that this is not a replacement adapter for the issue the company identified earlier this month with another model, which had a “potential issue” that could cause “reduced charging speeds over time” or even damage the port itself.

Those adapters were part of the new Power Promise customer satisfaction program but are unrelated to these new adapters.

Instead, these adapters are geared toward getting more Ford EV owners the capability to use Tesla Superchargers:

“To continue accelerating access to the Tesla Supercharger Network for Ford electric vehicle customers, Ford will start shipping a new Ford-branded complimentary adapter to customers as of October 31. Ford supplied adapters can be used with the more than 17,800 Tesla Superchargers across the U.S. and Canada, in addition to future DC Fast Chargers with NACS connections.

Ford identified the issue earlier this month and asked customers to prepare for the shipment of a replacement adapter “in the coming weeks,” a bulletin from the automaker sent to owners earlier this month said.

Ford to replace Tesla NACS adapters, warning of damaged charging ports

The replacement units are already being shipped out, a Ford spokesperson told us.

Ford was the first major automotive company to gain access to the Tesla Supercharger Network back in February.

Initially, Ford had gained access to 12,000 Superchargers, but the company and Tesla had upped the number to 17,800 just a few months later.

Polestar has officially landed access to more than 17,800 Tesla Superchargers across the United States and Canada. The company’s electric vehicle owners can now charge at the world’s most robust EV charging network.

Additionally, Polestar announced today that the company will integrate Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) into its future vehicles, eliminating the need for an adapter.

Polestar EVs gained access to the Tesla Supercharger Network this morning, as the company confirmed the ability in a press release this morning.

Adapters that will enable Supercharger access are available at any of Polestar’s Service Points. They will be delivered in mid-November.

Anders Gustafsson, Head of Polestar North America, commented on the company’s newfound access to the Supercharger Network:

“By offering customers access to the Tesla Supercharger network, we are able to provide owners with more charging options than ever before, elevating the Polestar ownership experience with more efficient charging convenience and capabilities. With the adoption of this standard, in combination with approximately 10,000 CCS DC fast chargers, current and prospective Polestar customers now have access to nearly 27,800 DC fast chargers and can feel more confident in their ability to charge on the go.”

Along with the plans to adopt the Tesla NACS inlet in its future vehicles and the availability of the NACS adapter, Polestar will update its in-car Google Maps to show all available charging points.

Tesla Supercharger access will be available in all three current Polestar vehicles.

Polestar follows companies like Ford, Rivian, Aptera, and General Motors, to gain Tesla Supercharger access and offer the world’s most expansive charging network to its owners.

Polestar first announced it would adopt NACS in June 2023. It was estimated that Supercharger access would be available earlier this year, but several companies’ timeframes were pushed back, including Polestar’s.

Tesla Japan recently reached a new milestone by setting up the company’s 60,000th Supercharger. The milestone was celebrated by Tesla executives on social media platform X.

As noted by Tesla Japan on its official account on X, its 60,000th Supercharger—which also hosts Japan’s first V4 stalls—is located in Enshu Morimachi, Shizuoka Prefecture. Interestingly enough, the location was also the site of Tesla Japan’s 600th Supercharger.

To commemorate the milestone, Tesla opted to set up special Supercharger V4 stalls in the location. The 600th Supercharger featured a faceplate adorned with origami prints, while the 60,000th Supercharger was fitted with a sleek, silver faceplate. Needless to say, the 600th and 60,000th Supercharger stalls stand as two of the most aesthetically pleasing Superchargers across the globe.

The milestone was praised by Tesla Director of Charging Max de Zegher, who shared a photo of the Tesla Japan Supercharger team posing in front of the 600th and 60,000th Supercharger stalls. As highlighted by the executive, the location of the commemorative Superchargers is strategic since it connects Nagoya and Tokyo.

“Great location with the fastest connection between Nagoya and Tokyo, accessible from both sides of the highway. The Japan team is awesome!” De Zegher wrote in his post on X.

The official Tesla Charging account highlighted in a post that the growth of the Supercharger Network in Japan has been accelerating over the past few years. As can be seen in a graph posted by the electric vehicle maker, most of the Supercharger Network’s growth in Japan has happened in the last four years. If this pace is maintained, it will only be a matter of time before the country is fully saturated with Tesla Superchargers.

Commenting on his growth, the Tesla Director of Charging noted that each Supercharger launch involves a collaboration of several teams and entities. “Although not as mind-blowing as catching a rocket with chopsticks… for the teams behind it, every Supercharger opening feels like a little miracle of collaboration with permitting jurisdictions, site hosts & utilities. The new routes that they open up bring happiness to traveling families, making it all so worth it!” De Zegher wrote in a post

Nissan Ariya owners will gain access to Tesla Supercharger later this year.

According to Nissan, North American Charging Standard or NACS adapters will be available to Ariya drivers by the end of 2024. The adapter will enable Ariaya drivers to charge at Tesla Supercharger stations.

“This adapter will allow Ariya drivers to conveniently charge at compatible Tesla Supercharger locations – dramatically increasing the number of public charging locations available to Ariya. In 2025, Nissan will begin offering EVs for the U.S. and Canadian markets with a NACS port,” stated Nissan.

Rivian and General Motors are already offering NACS adapters to their EV drivers. Rivian is providing the NACS adapters for free to its customers. Meanwhile, GM charges EV owners an additional $225 per adapter. It is unclear if Nissan will charge Ariya drivers for the adapter.

The Japanese automaker recently launched the Nissan Energy Charge Network, improving charging services for EV owners. The network enables Nissan Ariya owners to use the MyNissan app to find charging stations, see real-time charger availability, and pay for charging.

Over 90,000 fast chargers across the United States are part of the Nissan Energy Charge Network, including those from Electrify America, Shell Recharge, ChargePoint, and EVgo.
