Tesla China has updated its promotions, offering a final payment discount for the Model Y and extending a zero-interest finance deal for qualified Model Y and Model 3 buyers in China.

Tesla China announced the new program in a post on its official Weibo account.

Discount details:

  • With the recently announced discount in place, Tesla China has implemented an RMB 10,000 reduction on the final payment for existing Model Y vehicles.
  • The discount is effective from 8 am Beijing time on December 24, 2024.
  • Eligible models are the Model Y Rear Wheel Drive and Model Y Long Range All Wheel Drive.
  • Inventory and showroom cars are included in the promotion.
  • Customized vehicles, test drive units, or official second-hand cars are not included in the program.

Financing deal extension:

  • Tesla China’s 5-year, zero-interest financing has been extended to January 31, 2025 as well.
  • The financing deal is available for the Model Y RWD, Model Y Long Range AWD, Model 3 RWD, and Model 3 Long Range AWD.
  • Customers who wish to take advantage of the 5-year, zero-interest financing are required to place a down payment of at least RMB 79,900.

Context:

  • Tesla China’s recent sales push is an update from a similar offer announced in November, which was due to end by December 31, 2024.
  • The previous offer also included orders for customized vehicles, though the program had a strict delivery deadline of December 31, 2024.

Why it matters:

  • These adjustments come amid reports that Tesla would be ramping up the initial production of an updated Model Y at its Shanghai factory in January 2025.
  • The promotions may then be a way for the company to clear inventory before the updated Model Y hits the market.

Tesla’s new refreshed Model Y, which has been codenamed “Juniper,” is reportedly set to launch in the Chinese market very soon, local media in the country is reporting.

CarNewsChina is indicating that the new Model Y will have both a five-seat and six-seat variation. The five-seater will feature a facelift much like the Model 3 “Highland” did, and will enter production in January 2025.

There is no information on when the six-seater version could enter production, but the report says the five-seat Model Y Juniper will start being built at Gigafactory Shanghai in China just after the new year in January.

The six-seater Model Y Juniper will likely enter production later in the year. Reuters reported in September that this version of the new Model Y would be manufactured by late 2025. The report from the outlet also stated that Tesla was asking suppliers to prepare for a substantial increase in production of the Model Y in Shanghai.

There will be several notable changes between the current version of the all-electric crossover and the new version that will begin production next year, the report says.

Many of the changes will be related to the interior and exterior design, but there will also be battery and performance upgrades to help bolster the vehicle’s reputation as one of the best in the highly competitive Chinese electric vehicle market.

We have also spotted several Model Y Juniper test mules in the United States, as the vehicle is under wraps in California on public roads. Not all of the exact changes are yet known.

Tesla Model Y ‘Juniper’ spotted in China with several big changes

With the Model 3 Highland, Tesla focused on a new, more minimalistic interior, greater suspension performance, better cabin noise reduction, and a new fascia that gave the all-electric sedan a more modern look.

Tesla is launching a crazy Supercharging incentive in Europe for Model Y, offering one free year of charging at the automaker’s expansive network if delivery is taken by the end of the year.

Tesla is known for pushing the envelope in terms of what it offers to push sales upward toward the end of the year. The company has used things like discounts, free Supercharging, and other incentives to pad delivery figures as the end of the year approaches. It is something we have seen many times in the past.

2024 is no different.

Tesla is offering free Supercharging for one year in Europe for those who take delivery of the Model Y by the end of 2024:

Tesla has yet to launch any major delivery and demand triggers in the United States, but as it is still early November, it seems the company could be waiting until closer to December to get things going.

Last year, the Austin, Texas-based electric vehicle maker slashed $3,750 from both the Model 3 and Model Y in an effort to boost sales during the last ten days of the year.

It then doubled this discount to $7,500.

Tesla increases December’s unexpected discount of U.S. Model 3 & Y to $7,500

The discounts did not take effect until December 22. Analysts saw it as a crack in the armor of Tesla for pushing a substantial discount right as the end of the year was approaching.

This makes it interesting moving forward because some potential buyers might wait for Tesla to bring these discounts before buying a car. With its recrd of pushing deals on cars so late in the year, we will likely see Tesla make a similar move in the U.S. in the coming weeks.

The Tesla Model Y refresh, coded “Juniper,” has been spotted in China with several big changes to its exterior as the automaker plans to revamp its best-selling vehicle.

It appears the new look will first launch in China but will likely not be put out for deliveries until next year. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has maintained that the new Model Y will not be out in 2024 on two separate occasions this year.

That does not mean Tesla is not already working on something, and perhaps it is updating the Model Y’s look just as it did with the Model 3 over the past couple of years.

Evidence of this was spotted this weekend, as Tesla seems to be testing out the new Model Y in Shanghai. The vehicle was seen with front and rear bumper covers, keeping several exterior changes under wraps:

Based on the images, we can see that there are a few changes with the Model Y that Tesla is looking to implement, especially with lighting.

The images from the rear and rear quarter panel suggest there is a light bar, bringing a major change to the overall look and aesthetic of the Tesla Model Y that is currently offered.

Reports from China today suggest the Model Y will have a full-width LED light bar, much like what was unveiled on the Tesla Cybercab Robotaxi earlier in October.

Chinese automotive insider SugarDesign said on Weibo the vehicle will equip this style of light bar, bringing a more modern design to the vehicle (via Google Translate):

“With the release of new spy photos, Tesla’s mid-term update Model Y is getting closer and closer to us. The split headlight layout on the front face is already very obvious, and it seems to confirm the through-type headlight design mentioned by the “internal netizen” before.”

This brings up the question of when Model Y’s Refresh could make it to the United States. Musk has been adamant it won’t make it to the U.S. this year, but it very well could be something Tesla offers sometime in 2025.

Tesla has launched the Model Y Long Range Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) variant in the U.K. The vehicle, which would serve as the base trim of the all-electric crossover in the country, is also the most efficient variant of the Model Y.

Tesla U.K. announced the addition of the Model Y Long Range RWD on its official account on social media platform X. As per Tesla U.K., the Model Y Long Range RWD could provide an estimated fuel savings of £6,400 over four years. The Model Y Long Range RWD can also cost as little as £175 per year, assuming that the vehicle is driven 10,000 miles per year with Octopus Energy’s rates.

Prior to the introduction of the Model Y Long Range RWD to the U.K., the base version of the all-electric sedan in the country was the Model Y RWD, which features a lithium iron phosphate battery pack. The Model Y RWD cost £44,990 before options. For this price, the vehicle offers an estimated WLTP range of 283 miles per charge, a 6.6-second 0-60 mph time, and 135 mph top speed.

The Tesla Model Y Long Range RWD costs £46,990 before options in the U.K. For comparison, the mid-tier Model Y Long Range All Wheel Drive (AWD) and the Model Y Performance cost £51,990 and £59,990 before options, respectively. This makes the Model Y Long Range RWD quite a good deal, considering its 373-mile WLTP range, 135 mph top speed, and 5.7-second 0-60 mph time.

With its estimated WLTP range of 373 miles per charge, the Model Y Long Range RWD currently stands as the longest-range variant of the all-electric crossover in Tesla U.K.’s lineup. The Model Y Long Range AWD, in comparison, is listed with an estimated WLTP range of 331 miles per charge, while the Model Y Performance is listed with an estimated WLTP range of 319 miles per charge.

Norway saw a total of 12,966 passenger car sales in September 2024. From this number, 12,495 were battery electric vehicles. This means that 96.4% of all passenger car sales registered in Norway last month were BEVs. Tesla saw much success in the country in September, with the company seeing more than 4,000 registrations.

Tesla celebrated the milestone in a post on its official Tesla Europe & Middle East account on social media platform X. As per the electric vehicle maker, every third car registered in Norway in September 2024 was a Tesla. This statement is accurate, as Tesla saw a total of 4,210 vehicle registrations last month in Norway.

As noted by Norway’s Road Traffic Information Council (OFV), September 2024 was yet another record month for the country’s electric vehicle sector. The OFV noted that year-to-date, the share of electric vehicles amounts to about 88%. For context, Norway has a political goal of all new passenger cars from January 1, 2025 onwards being zero-emission vehicles.

OFV Director Øyvind Solberg Thorsen shared a comment about the matter. “We have loyally followed the authorities’ call to buy electric cars rather than diesel and petrol cars. With an electric car share of over 96% of new car sales in September, the 2025 target may be within reach,” he stated

The OFV also highlighted that Norway’s EV sales in September were boosted by a large shipment of Teslas that arrived during the month. This shipment effectively resulted in the Model Y crossover and Model 3 sedan showing dominance in Norway’s auto sector. As per the OFV, the Model Y saw 2,107 registrations in September, while the Model 3 saw 2,067 registrations. This made the two Teslas the best and second-best-selling vehicles in the country last month.

The gap between Tesla’s two mainstream vehicles and their competitors was notable as well. Norway’s third best-selling vehicle in September was the Volvo EX30, which saw 803 registrations. The fourth and fifth best-selling cars in the country were the Skoda Enyaq and the Toyota bZ4X, which saw 702 and 659 registrations, respectively.

The Tesla Model Y has surpassed the Nissan Leaf as Norway’s best-selling EV of all time, as records tracked starting in 2011 show the all-electric crossover has finally worked past one of the first EVs offered.

The Model Y became the best-selling vehicle in the world last year and is on pace to be the top seller in the United States this year.

However, there are some vehicles that have been around for a very long time, like the Nissan Leaf, and in terms of all-time sales, it takes several years for the newcomers to catch up.

Now, sales and registration figures show the Model Y has surpassed the Nissan Leaf, according to Electric Drives.

The Model Y has already sold 59,775 vehicles since it was first offered in Norway, surpassing the Nissan Leaf, which was at 58,860 as of September.

The Model Y is the best-selling EV in Norway through the first nine months of the year. According to EU-EV sales data, the Model Y has 12,578 sales, outpacing the Volvo EX30 and Volkswagen ID.4 by a considerable margin.

The EX30 has 5,318 sales so far this year, while the ID.4 has 4,944.

The Tesla Model 3 is in fourth with 4,652 sales, according to the site. The all-electric sedan currently sits as the third-best-selling vehicle in Norway’s rich history of EVs, with 43,910 units.

The Model Y has truly taken so many different markets by storm, especially as it has already landed as the best-selling vehicle for a calendar year. While we can guess it will be close to repeating that record once again this year

Parenting and pregnancy resource firm BabyCenter recently published its 2024 Best Car Awards, which features the results of a survey given to parents about their vehicle choices. As per the study’s respondents, the Tesla Model Y is the best electric vehicle for families in the market today.

BabyCenter surveyed about 500 U.S.-based parents aged 18-54 who currently drive a vehicle from model year 1999 or newer. Respondents were asked about the ages of their children, the number and types of car seats in their vehicle, and the features that they value the most, among others.

Interestingly enough, the company noted that only 3% of the study’s respondents currently drive an electric vehicle. But based on the responses from this group, it was evident that the Tesla Model Y was the most-driven and highest-rated EV.

Credit: BabyCenter

While BabyCenter noted that the Model Y is a premium vehicle that starts at about $45,000 before incentives, it is a very well-equipped vehicle that fits three or more car seats depending on its seating configuration. The company praised the Model Y for its utility, as well as its robust set of passive and active safety features, such as Forward Collision Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking, and Autopilot, which comes standard.

BabyCenter also highlighted a number of EV-specific features in the Model Y that are great for families. As per the company, the Model Y’s large battery does not just provide the vehicle with ample driving range; it also allows the all-electric crossover to ensure that children are always at an acceptable temperature in the cabin regardless of the weather outside, or if the vehicle is in motion or not.

The Model Y is not Tesla’s fastest vehicle, nor is it equipped with the latest tech that the company currently has to offer. What the Model Y has is a balanced combination of safety, utility, performance, and tech at a very reasonable price. This is one of the reasons why the Model Y has become Tesla’s best-selling vehicle to date, and perhaps why the vehicle ultimately became 2023’s best-selling car by volume.

It appears that the Tesla Model Y is still a very notable presence in China’s SUV market. From January to August 2024, the all-electric crossover appears to have become China’s best-selling SUV, battery-electric or otherwise.

Based on data compiled by Yiche, the Tesla Model Y sold a total of 292,489 units in the Chinese domestic auto sector from January to August 2024. China’s next two best-selling SUVs—the BYD Song Plus New Energy and the BYD Yuan Plus—sold 245,435 units and 169,960 units in the same period, respectively.

The reengineered Tesla Model 3 is also performing relatively well in the Chinese domestic market, with the vehicle selling 99,198 units from January to August 2024. This may be partly due to the exports of the Model 3 to foreign territories, since Giga Shanghai is only one of two Tesla factories that are currently producing the revamped all-electric sedan for the global market.

Tesla China seems to be gaining some momentum this Q3 2024, with the electric vehicle maker’s new vehicle registrations proving quite strong in recent weeks. In the week ending September 8, for example, Tesla China saw 16,200 new vehicle registrations, and in the week ending September 15, the company saw 15,600 registrations. If the electric vehicle maker maintains this pace until the end of the quarter, Tesla China’s Q3 2024 results could prove to be quite impressive.

What is quite remarkable is that Tesla is performing very well in key markets like China with a very limited number of products. The same is true for other markets like the United States. Recent data suggests that the Model Y is within striking distance of becoming the U.S.’ best-selling vehicle, with a market share of 2.8% through Q2. This puts the Model Y just a hair below the Toyota RAV4, the country’s best-selling car through the second quarter.

The Model Y may not be the best-performing Tesla, nor is it the most exciting design-wise, but it is a vehicle that presents a fantastic balance of price, features, safety, and utility. This balance, as it turns out, is allowing the Tesla Model Y to come within striking distance of becoming the United States’ best-selling vehicle by volume.

Wolf Street Corp., citing recent data from Experian, noted that there seems to be a change happening in the U.S.’ auto sector this year. Over the years, the Ford F-150 and full-sized pickups have maintained an iron grip at the top of the country’s best-selling vehicles list. But with high-end pickup trucks now approaching and even moving past the $100,000 mark, the vehicles are no longer as attainable as they were in the past.

This has resulted in the Ford F-150 dropping to No.3 in the United States’ best-selling vehicle list through the second quarter of 2024 with a share of 2.7%. Above the F-150 were two vehicles that still offer a decent amount of utility at a significantly lower price—the Tesla Model Y and the Toyota RAV4, both of which attained a share of 2.8% through the end of Q2 2024.

The Model Y’s 2.8% share of the US auto market is its highest share ever, an increase from its 2.6% share in Q1 2024. With this, the Model Y is now just “a hair away from being the #1 best-selling model in the U.S.,” Wolf Street noted. This would be an immense achievement for the Model Y. Last year, after all, the all-electric crossover became the world’s best-selling car, but it was not able to secure the same spot in the United States. This may change this year.

Amidst the Tesla Model Y’s growth in the U.S. auto sector, the market share of battery electric vehicles in the country has grown to a record 9.0% in the second quarter, up from 8.1% year-over-year. These results, which do not include hybrids and plug-in hybrids, suggest that battery electric cars like the Model Y are still eating market share from combustion-powered vehicles, quite unlike the declining EV demand narrative prevalent in mainstream media.
