Tesla China has launched a rather rare discount for select Model Y variants. The discount was announced by Tesla China in a post on its official social media account on Weibo.

As could be seen in Tesla China’s post on Weibo, domestic customers who order the Model Y Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) and Long Range All Wheel Drive (AWD), and take delivery of their vehicles between November 25 and December 31 can take advantage of a RMB 10,000 ($1,379) discount on their purchase. The RMB 10,000 discount is not applicable for the Tesla Model Y Performance.

For context, the Model Y RWD starts at RMB 249,900, the Model Y Long Range AWD starts at RMB 290,900, and the Model Y Performance starts at RMB 354,900, as per the vehicle’s order page. With the discount in place, customers can acquire the Model Y RWD for RMB 239,900 and the Model Y Long Range AWD for RMB 280,900 before options. Estimated delivery dates for the Model Y RWD and AWD are still listed at 1-3 weeks.

As noted in a report from CNEV Post, the RMB 10,000 discount applies to new Model Y orders, inventory units, and show cars. Model Y units that were used by Tesla China for test drives and official used vehicles, however, are not eligible for the RMB 10,000 discount. The Tesla Model 3, the Model Y’s sedan sibling, is also not eligible for the RMB 10,000 discount.

While Tesla is known for being quite volatile with its vehicle pricing, the company actually rarely implements a discount for its offerings. This makes the Model Y’s RMB 10,000 discount offer quite unique. It is then unsurprising that the promotion has triggered speculations that the electric vehicle maker is implementing the discount as a way to sell as many current-generation Model Y units as possible before it rolls out the highly-anticipated “Juniper” update, which is expected to be rolled out sometime next year.

This morning’s reports of a Tesla Cybertruck recall only went to shed more light on how the production ramp of the pickup is going.

With delivery figures for the third quarter revealed yesterday, it also shows a grim reality for the Model S and Model X, two vehicles that have become more of a novelty in Tesla’s lineup as the Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck have truly taken charge.

The NHTSA documents released this morning show the Cybertruck is being recalled for a delayed rearview image, which will be resolved with an Over-the-Air update.

Tesla addresses Cybertruck rearview camera “recall” with free software update

However, they also show that 27,185 units are potentially impacted by the issue, giving us a rough guess of how many Cybertrucks have been produced thus far.

The breakdown seems to show that from the last Cybertruck recall in June, when 11,688 units were potentially impacted, we have seen roughly 15,497 additional pickups make their way to customers.

In a perfect world, that would mean 910 Cybertruck are delivered every week, or 130 per day, and since the first recall occurred with three weeks left in June and in Q2, we can subtract 2,730 Cybertrucks from the 15,497 that have been delivered since then.

These figures are very rough estimates. That would leave 13,157 Cybertrucks delivered in Q3, roughly.

Tesla said 22,915 Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck were delivered in Q3. This would leave just 9,758 Model S and Model X to be delivered, less than 10,000 units for an entire quarter, if the Cybertruck delivery figures are close to accurate.

“We’re Continuing to Make Them for Sentimental Reasons”

Elon Musk said during the Q3 2019 Earnings Call that the Model S and Model X are truly vehicles that are “niche products,” and they knew it wouldn’t take the company to a mass-market status:

“I mean, they’re very expensive, made in low volume. To be totally frank, we’re continuing to make them more for sentimental reasons than anything else. They’re really of minor importance to the future.”

Tesla’s Q1 ’21 Deliveries prove Elon Musk was right about the Model S and X in 2019

Interestingly, the vehicles have had their moments through the past few years. In Q4 2023, the Model S and Model X saw their highest delivery count in five years, accounting for 22,969 deliveries that quarter.

Now, they’re around the 10,000 mark.

It will be interesting to see what Tesla’s plans are for these two cars, especially as Robotaxi unveiling is scheduled for next week, and there could be the potential for more vehicles to be released in the coming years with the next-gen platform taking focus.

It would be a real gut punch to the long-time Tesla fans who saw the Model S and Model X launch the company into the Model 3. But all good things must come to an end.

Tesla has implemented a new promotion for customers of the Model X Long Range Dual Motor All Wheel Drive (AWD) in the United States. The promotion, which was recently observed on the vehicle’s official order page, allows Model X AWD customers to gain a premium add-on to their vehicle for free.

As could be seen in the Model X AWD’s order page, add-ons such as premium paint options, 22” Turbine Wheels, Black and White Interior, Six or Seven Seat Interior, and Yoke Steering could be free if Full Self-Driving (FSD) is fully purchased with the vehicle.

With FSD ordered with the Model X AWD, the highest-priced add-on to the vehicle would be free of charge. For example, if a customer orders the Model X AWD with a Seven-Seat Interior, which costs $3,500, and Lunar Silver Paint, which costs $2,500, the Seven Seat Interior will be complimentary.

This means that as long as FSD is ordered with the Model X AWD, even the vehicle’s more pricey add-ons, such as its Six Seat Interior, which costs $6,500, and its 22” Turbine Wheels, which cost $5,500, could be complimentary. It should be noted, however, that customers must order FSD’s full $8,000 add-on to avail of the promotion, not the recently announced Drive Anywhere Package, which bundles FSD, free Supercharging, and Premium Connectivity for three years.

It remains to be seen how the recently launched promotion would be received by consumers, though it does make the Model X AWD more appealing. The promotion itself probably does not cost Tesla a lot either, as the Model X does not sell in very high volumes. As per Tesla’s Q2 2024 vehicle delivery and production report alone, the company reported 443,956 deliveries worldwide during the quarter, 422,405 of which were Model 3 and Model Y.

This meant that all of Tesla’s other vehicles — the Cybertruck, Semi, Model S, and Model X — only saw 21,551 units delivered in the second quarter. From this number, Cox Automotive estimated that 8,755 were comprised of the Cybertruck. Considering that the Semi is still being produced in very limited quantities, it would appear that less than 13,000 Model S and Model X were sold in Q2.

Tesla has launched a 3-year subscription bundle for the Model S and Model X. The $5,000 bundle includes access to Full Self Driving (FSD) (Supervised), free Supercharging, and Premium Connectivity.

Tesla’s official website shows that the 3-year subscription bundle is only available for the Model S and Model X for now. Model 3 and Model Y orders are only allowed to purchase FSD for its full 8,000 price. This is understandable as Tesla is likely testing the waters for the 3-year subscription bundle.

The 3-year FSD (Supervised), free Supercharging, and Premium Connectivity bundle have mostly received support from the electric vehicle community, some of whom noted that the service would probably be popular among those who lease their cars for three years. It should be noted, however, that vehicles that are for commercial use are not eligible for the 3-year bundle.

The price of the 3-year bundle is quite reasonable considering the individual prices of the services that are included.  Full Self Driving’s monthly subscription costs $99, so three years of the service would be worth $3,564. Premium Connectivity, at $10 a month, would cost $360 over three years. Free Supercharging could not be purchased individually, but a reasonable value for the service could be around $30 a month or $1,080 over three years. Together, the three services amount to $5,004 over a three-year period.

Tesla’s 3-year bundle has the makings of a popular service, but the fact that it is currently limited to the Model S and Model X means that only a small group of customers would be able to take advantage of the offer. As per Tesla’s Q2 vehicle delivery and production report, Tesla only delivered a total of 21,551 non-Model 3/Y vehicles in the second quarter. From that number, Cox Automotive estimated that 8,755 were Tesla Cybertrucks. This means that just over 12,700 Model S and Model X were sold in the second quarter.

Tesla has rolled out a unique incentive for the reengineered Model 3 Performance and the Model X All Wheel Drive (AWD). With the incentive in place, customers would be able to acquire the two vehicles with the federal tax credit even if they add options like premium paint for the Model 3 Performance or seating configurations for the Model X AWD.

The program was initially shared on social media by longtime industry watcher and Tesla podcast Ride the Lightning host Ryan McCaffrey, who shared a screenshot of a message from the electric vehicle maker. As per the message, the Model 3 Performance could be acquired with complimentary paint options as long as it is ordered with Full Self-Driving (FSD). The Model X AWD, on the other hand, could be ordered with complimentary seating options as long as it is ordered with FSD.

Tesla’s message is as follows:

Model 3 and Model X: Complimentary Option with Full Self-Driving (US Only)

To enable additional Model 3 Performance and Model X All-Wheel Drive vehicles to qualify for the Federal Tax Credit, we are offering complimentary Paint option for Model 3 Performance and Seating Layout for Model X All-Wheel Drive.

For a limited time, customers can choose one of these options for free when Full Self-Driving is added to their order. Visit the announcement for full eligibility details and FAQs.

Note: Offer available for limited time only and subject to change without notice.

A look at the order pages for the Model 3 and Model X on Tesla’s official website shows that the incentive is active as of writing. As could be seen in a screenshot of a Model 3 Performance configured with Ultra Red Paint, the premium paint option is listed simply as “Included” as long as FSD is selected with the purchase. Without FSD, Ultra Red Paint is listed as a $2,000 option.

The same is true for the Model X AWD’s Seating Layout. With FSD included in the order, even the flagship all-electric SUV’s Seven Seat Interior is listed as “Included.” Without FSD in the order, the Model X AWD’s Seven Seat Interior is listed as a $3,500 option.

Tesla’s unique system to ensure the Model 3 Performance and the Model X AWD qualify for the IRA’s federal tax credit would likely be appreciated by customers of the vehicle. The Model 3 Performance, after all, is arguably the best-looking Tesla in the company’s lineup today, so it looks especially good with premium paint. The Model X AWD, on the other hand, is a legitimate people mover, so a six or seven-seat interior arguably fits the flagship all-electric SUV best.

Tesla has brought back a cool feature exclusive to the Model X as its self-presenting doors are now available once again.

Tesla is bringing back the feature with Software Update 2024.20.1. In 2023, Tesla removed ultrasonic sensors from the Model X in an effort to bolster its vision-only approach to self-driving.

However, the removal of these USS components eliminated some features, including the Model X’s self-presenting doors.

(Credit: Tesla)

Now, the Model X is able to present the cabin to the driver when they walk up to the car with a key fob or phone key. The vehicle will detect it and open the door automatically, allowing the driver to enter without ever touching the door handle.

The return of the feature was first spotted by Not a Tesla App.

Drivers won’t have to touch the door to close it, either. Instead, the driver can simply tap the brake pedal to close the door on its own, a neat feature that has returned after a short time away due to some hardware updates on the Tesla lineup.

The previous versions of this feature allowed the door to open only a few inches. This update will open the door completely, eliminating any need to touch the door.

Below, you will see a video of the Model X self-presenting doors as they work in the refreshed Model X that came out last year:

The font size of ABS warning indicators has caused a “recall” of 2.2 million Tesla vehicles, which is really going to be fixed via an Over-the-Air update.

2,193,869 Tesla vehicles, including the Cybertruck, Model S, Model 3, Model Y, and Model X, are the subject of a font size problem, which is smaller than 3.2 millimeters, a violation of FMVSS 105 and 135.

“On affected vehicles, the letter font size of the Brake, Park, and Antilock brake system (ABS) visual warning indicators is smaller than 3.2 mm (1/8 inch), as prescribed in FMVSS Nos. 105 and 135,” the NHTSA said in its 573 Safety Recall Report.

The NHTSA says the small font size “could reduce the driver’s detection of it when illuminated, increasing the risk of a collision.”

On Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y vehicles, the issue will be remedied through Software Update 2023.44.30.9. On Cybertruck, Software Update 2023.44.9.1 will solve the issue.

Incredibly, the NHTSA is still required to refer to these issues, which are fixed without any physical attention, as a recall, which causes mainstream media to run with the narrative that Tesla’s vehicles are faulty.

Elon Musk calls on NHTSA to update terminology following 1M unit Tesla ‘recall’

However, this is fixed the same way your smartphone gets updates and improvements while you sleep.

“At no cost to customers, affected vehicles will receive an over-the-air software remedy, which began deploying to certain affected vehicles in late January 2024 with software release 2023.44.30.13. The remedy increases the letter font size of the Brake, Park, and Antilock brake system (ABS) visual warning indicators to be not less than 3.2 mm (1/8 inch), as prescribed in FMVSS Nos. 105 and 135. Remaining affected vehicles will receive the same over-the-air software remedy with an upcoming release in early February 2024,” the NHTSA’s Recall Safety Report said.

Tesla has adjusted ranges for the Model S, Model X, and Model Y as adjustments to the EPA testing strategy for electric vehicles have added more realistic expectations for driving distance.

The Model Y Long Range and Performance configurations were reduced from 330 to 310 and 303 to 285, respectively. We reported on those adjustments last night, along with the addition of two new colors for the all-electric crossover: Stealth Grey and Ultra Red.

Tesla Model Y gets two new colors and new range ratings

However, the Model Y was not the only vehicle to receive range adjustments from the automaker, as the Model S and Model X, Tesla’s flagship vehicles, also received new range ratings.

The Model S Plaid is down to 359 miles from 396, while the Model X Plaid has a 326-mile rating, instead of the 333 it originally had.

The Model S Dual Motor All-Wheel-Drive also had its top speed reduced to 130 MPH, down from 149 MPH previously.

The adjustments were caused by a new testing strategy from the EPA, which was released in July 2022, but was applied to new testing for 2024 model year vehicles and beyond.

The revisions are aimed at EVs with multiple driver mode selections and are “intended to ensure all label data is generated in a consistent manner that will better reflect real-world performance, and to reduce testing burden for the industry,” a letter from the EPA to EV manufacturers said.

Other media outlets reported that Tesla’s adjusted range ratings are due to Department of Justice investigations claiming the automaker overstated expected range. However, there are a variety of factors that can lower EV range, including driving style and weather, just to name a couple.

The Model 3 and Cybertruck’s range ratings were unaffected by the changes, but we will likely see other EV makers begin to adjust their numbers as well due to the EPA testing changes.

The Tesla Model 3 and Model Y were the two most popular used EVs among buyers in 2023, making up nearly half of the total market for pre-owned electric cars.

The Model 3 and Model Y have routinely been popular used EVs due to their strong resale price and value. Additionally, they are extremely appealing to consumers because they continue to remain modern and relevant through the use of Over-the-Air updates, which helps the cars equip new features and improve drivability, in some instances.

According to a new list from iSeeCars, the Model 3 was the most popular used EV in the United States for the second straight year, while the Model Y followed up its second-place performance in 2022 with an identical placing.

The Model 3 made up 34.9 percent of total 1-t0-5-year-old used EV sales for 2023, while the Model Y accounted for 11.9 percent of the sales.

The car in third place was the Chevrolet Bolt, which is not much of a surprise. The Bolt is already one of the most affordable EVs on the market when purchased brand new, but the car purchased pre-owned is extremely affordable and appeals to many consumers because they feel the advantages of an EV can be felt without a premium initial purchase price.

Tesla vehicles held the four top spots in 2022, but the Model S and Model X phased backward slightly in 2023.

The Model S placed fifth, behind the Bolt and Nissan LEAF, with 5.6 percent. The Model X was sixth with 5.5 percent. The vehicles had a 9.8 percent and 7.7 percent total sales share in 2022, respectively.

Karl Brauer, iSeeCars’ executive analyst, commented on the 2023 results for used EVs:

“Most of the top-ranking electric cars are showing their age, with only the Model Y being relatively new to the market. And in this race of older EVs, the aging Bolt and LEAF pulled ahead of the aging Model S and Model X. Without major updates to Tesla’s most expensive vehicles they are likely to continue dropping in popularity.”

Unfortunately, it appears gas-powered cars are still the favored option for many consumers. To be fair, there are a lot more of them on the market.

Every U.S. state and major city was tallied with the most popular car, and an EV failed to break through on either list. In California as a whole and Los Angeles and San Francisco specifically, the Honda Civic was the most popular used vehicle.

Tesla’s turn signal design on its newer vehicles is causing havoc in Norwegian driving schools as it lacks a stalk and is being looked at as a potential hazard among instructions, leading to the vehicles being banned from some institutions.

Tesla implemented force touch buttons on the Model S and Model X, and then eventually, the design came to the “Highland” Model 3. The design is typical of Tesla, highlighting minimalism and modernism at the same time, but it has been a polarizing topic among drivers and owners.

In its quest for self-driving, Tesla has slowly started phasing things out of the cabin. First, it implemented a smaller steering wheel, or Yoke, and then it started eliminating stalks. Now, three of the vehicles in its lineup are without the stalk, and drivers push buttons for turn signals.

However, there is a driving school in Norway, known as the Harstad Traffic School, which is run by Jåhn Hansen Øyen. Øyen was interested in a Tesla based on his colleagues’ use of the car.

However, in a new report from Electrek (via Motor), there is a major issue with the buttons, and it has to do with the use of a turn signal when exiting a roundabout.

The button is harder to access and activate than a stalk, and Øyen said that it is difficult to turn the blinker on when driving.

He said:

“I tested the Model 3 and noticed that I lost both focus and direction in roundabouts.”

Eventually, instructors saw Øyen’s findings with the Model 3 in a group for driving schools, and other instructors who also drove the vehicle felt they also had an increased risk of potential incidents when using the buttons.

The chance of a problem increased among students, who were less experienced. Teslas were then banned from several schools because of the issue.
