Tesla Director of Autopilot Software Ashok Elluswamy has been promoted to Vice President of AI Software. The promotion was listed on the Tesla executive’s personal LinkedIn page

Elluswamy has been with Tesla for 10 years and 10 months as of writing. His long tenure in the electric vehicle maker started in January 2014, when he was hired as a Software Engineer for Tesla’s Autopilot program. Considering that the first iteration of Autopilot was launched in October 2015, it seems safe to infer that Elluswamy was likely one of the first members of the company’s Autopilot team.

Elluswamy would work as an Autopilot Software Engineer for 2.5 years, before being promoted to Autopilot Senior Software Engineer on June 2016. He would be promoted once more in September 2017 to Autopilot Senior Staff Software Engineer, and in May 2019, he would be promoted to Tesla’s Director of Autopilot Software.

Elluswamy would serve as Tesla’s Autopilot Director for 5.5 years, leading the autonomy software team for the company’s Autopilot program. His run as Tesla’s Autopilot Director seems to have been successful, with the company launching and rolling out FSD Beta and FSD (Supervised) over the years, even on the Cybertruck. Tesla community members appreciated Elluswamy’s willingness to engage with members of the EV community on X, where he posts insights and updates on a fairly regular basis.

Needless to say, Elluswamy’s rise in Tesla seems to have been the result of extremely hard work—hard work that definitely makes him deserving as the company’s new Vice President of AI Software.

Elluswamy seems to have capped off his tenure as Tesla’s Autopilot Director at the recently held “We, Robot” event, where the company showcased its Cybercab and Robovan to more than 2,000 attendees. As per the new VP of AI Software, the Robotaxi unveiling event featured 19 Cybercabs and 29 Model Ys that were autonomously driving for over 3.5 hours, transporting over 2,000 guests across 1,300 trips. He also noted that the Cybercabs were running near-production AI software that is expected to ship in FSD V13.

Tesla has released its Q2 2024 vehicle safety report. The report hints that Teslas are still among the safest cars on the road today, and this is in no small part due to the safety provided by innovations such as Autopilot and Full Self-Driving.

As per Tesla, it believes that a “unique combination of passive safety, active safety, and automated driver assistance is crucial for keeping not just Tesla drivers and passengers safe, but all drivers on the road.” This combination seems to be working for the company as the Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y have achieved among the lowest overall probability of injury of any vehicles ever tested by the United States’ New Car Assessment Program.

Tesla’s combination of passive and active safety features and advanced driver-assist systems seemed to have made a difference in the second quarter of 2024. As per Tesla’s Q2 vehicle safety report, it recorded one crash for every 6.88 million miles driven in which Autopilot technology was used. For Tesla drivers who were not using Autopilot, one crash was recorded for every 1.45 million miles driven. Recent data from the NHTSA and FHWA indicates that in the U.S., one crash was recorded for every 670,000 miles of driving.

“In the 2nd quarter, we recorded one crash for every 6.88 million miles driven in which drivers were using Autopilot technology. For drivers who were not using Autopilot technology, we recorded one crash for every 1.45 million miles driven. By comparison, the most recent data available from NHTSA and FHWA (from 2022) shows that in the United States there was an automobile crash approximately every 670,000 miles,” Tesla wrote in its vehicle safety report.

Tesla also shared its vehicle fire incident data. As per the electric vehicle maker, between 2012 and 2022, about one Tesla vehicle fire event happened for every 130 million miles traveled. This is notably less than the NFPA and U.S. Department of Transportation’s data, which indicated that one vehicle fire occurs in the United States for every 18 million miles traveled. Tesla noted that its vehicle fire data is actually quite conservative as it includes “fire events that are caused by structure fires, wildfires, arson, and other causes unrelated to the vehicle.”

Tesla has reached a settlement in a case regarding a fatal Autopilot accident, just a day before the trial was set to begin.

Following the filing of a 2018 lawsuit alleging that Tesla’s Autopilot system had caused the accident killing 38-year-old Model X owner, the automaker has settled for an undisclosed amount ahead of the trial. A state court in San Jose, California publicized filings for the case on Monday, though terms of the settlement were not disclosed.

Huang, an engineer at Apple, was killed in 2018 when his vehicle veered off of a Mountain View highway into the road barrier, going around 71 mph. According to a subsequent investigation from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Huang was likely distracted and playing a game on his phone prior to the accident.

The NTSB also reported that limitations to Tesla’s Autopilot system had been partly to blame for the accident.

Tesla deep fake argument in Autopilot case ‘deeply troubling,’ Judge says

Tesla argued that Huang caused the crash with his “highly extraordinary misuse of his vehicle and its Autopilot features,” pointing to the fact that he had been playing Total War: Three Kingdoms in rush-hour traffic (via Bloomberg).

According to court filings from Tesla, Huang’s hands were detected to be off of the steering wheel 34 percent of the time in the 19 minutes leading up to the accident, even including the final six seconds.

In the lawsuit, Huang’s family claimed that the vehicle failed to live up to Tesla’s claims, as Walter had believed it “was safer than a human-operated vehicle.”

The family also claimed that the Autopilot system hadn’t been trained to detect barriers where two highways merge, noting that it had become confused and caused the 2017 Model X to exit its lane. Many also expected Huang’s lawyers to claim that Tesla CEO Elon Musk had been aggressive in his promotion of Autopilot as being better than human drivers.

On its website, Tesla writes:

“Autopilot is an advanced driver assistance system that enhances safety and convenience behind the wheel. When used properly, Autopilot reduces your overall workload as a driver. Each new Tesla vehicle is equipped with multiple external cameras and powerful vision processing to provide an additional layer of safety.”

Later on the page, Tesla goes on:

“Before enabling Autopilot, the driver first needs to agree to ‘keep your hands on the steering wheel at all times’ and to always ‘maintain control and responsibility for your vehicle.’ Subsequently, every time the driver engages Autopilot, they are shown a visual reminder to ‘keep your hands on the wheel.'”

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has released a study showing that Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) safeguards are lacking across brands, with most of the 14 partially automated systems tested receiving “marginal” or “poor” ratings.

In a press release shared on Tuesday, the IIHS released early results from the new ratings system, noting that partial automation systems from Tesla, Ford, Nissan, and most other automakers that were tested were lacking in multiple categories. The study offered ratings of good, acceptable, marginal or poor, both overall and in specific categories.

Level 2 systems like Tesla Autopilot can improve drivers’ attentiveness: IIHS study

“We evaluated partial automation systems from BMW, Ford, General Motors, Genesis, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Tesla and Volvo,” said David Harkey, IIHS President. “Most of them don’t include adequate measures to prevent misuse and keep drivers from losing focus on what’s happening on the road.”

Of the 14 partially automated systems tested thus far, only one system from any automaker was deemed acceptable, while two were rated marginal, 11 were rated poor, and none were rated good. The categories that were individually rated for each system included driver monitoring, attention reminders, emergency procedures, lane change, adaptive cruise control (ACC) resume, cooperative steering, and safety features.

The IIHS gave both Tesla’s Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) beta systems poor ratings overall, while Volvo Pilot Assist, Nissan ProPilot, Mercedes Active Distance Assist Distronic, Ford BlueCruise and several others were rated poor. Driver monitoring and attention reminders were some of the lower-rated categories across most brands, highlighting the ability for drivers to trick systems into thinking they’re being fully aware.

The research non-profit also noted that there was “little” evidence to support that partially automated systems like these are actually at the point that they currently make driving safer—though most companies target safety as a number one goal with ADAS programs.

“Some drivers may feel that partial automation makes long drives easier, but there is little evidence it makes driving safer,” Harkey said. “As many high-profile crashes have illustrated, it can introduce new risks when systems lack the appropriate safeguards.”

The top-rated systems in the index  included Lexus Teammate with Advanced Drive with an acceptable rating, along with the GM Super Cruise and Nissan ProPilot Assist with Navi-Link. Every other system was rated poor overall.

“These results are worrying, considering how quickly vehicles with these partial automation systems are hitting our roadways,” Harkey added.

“But there’s a silver lining if you look at the performance of the group as a whole. No single system did well across the board, but in each category at least one system performed well. That means the fixes are readily available and, in some cases, may be accomplished with nothing more than a simple software update.”

A U.S. agency has condemned the use of its seal in one of two anti-Tesla Super Bowl commercials from The Dawn Project, claiming that Tesla’s Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) beta are dangerous and need to be boycotted.

In a press release on Monday, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said that The Dawn Project could not use its seal in one of the two anti-Tesla commercials that were aired during the Super Bowl. The agency also sent a letter to the company, which is run by Green Hills Software founder and Tesla and FSD beta critic Dan O’Dowd, demanding that the company stop using the seal immediately to help protect the agency’s reputation as a federal regulator.

“Contrary to Federal law, you did not obtain, and the NTSB did not grant, permission to use the NTSB Seal in your Super Bowl LVIII commercial or on any other materials,” writes the agency in the letter. “Moreover, your unauthorized use of the NTSB’s seal spuriously implies endorsement of your company and/or message by the NTSB. Accordingly, the NTSB demands that you cease any further unsanctioned use of the NTSB Seal, and that the NTSB’s Seal be immediately removed from your website and YouTube page, as well as any further airings of the offending commercial. We further request that you notify us in writing when all changes have been made.”

The NTSB also points to its web page dedicated to highway safety investigations of Level 2 automated vehicles for safety recommendations.

The advertisement displaying the NTSB seal said that the “feds demanded that Autopilot be restricted to freeways,” alleging that tragic accidents had occurred after Tesla refused this request and continued to let Autopilot be used in improper areas. Both commercials also encouraged viewers to “boycott Tesla to keep your kids safe,” alleging that the automaker’s FSD beta would run over a child crossing the street.

You can see the NTSB’s full letter to The Dawn Project below, along with the screenshot included in the letter and the full anti-Tesla Super Bowl commercial in question.

Tesla sent a similar cease and desist to The Dawn Project in 2022, after one of the company’s ads said that the FSD beta would “mow down children.”

The Dawn Project also aired a Super Bowl commercial last year with similar claims, and O’Dowd has been incredibly outspoken in opposition to Tesla in the past. His claims about Autopilot and the FSD beta have been debunked multiple times and Tesla warns drivers using both systems that they do not make the vehicle autonomous, adding that they “require a fully attentive driver who is ready to take immediate action at all times.”

Each year, automakers and other companies spend a significant amount of money on purchasing commercial space during the Super Bowl, and this year, electric vehicles (EVs) are taking center stage during the Big Game. Advertisements from BMW, Kia and Volkswagen are showing off the companies’ EV offerings, while the game will also feature two different anti-Tesla commercials from Full Self-Driving (FSD) beta critic Dan O’Dowd.

It’s worth wondering if we could see something from Tesla this year, though it likely won’t be a commercial in video format. Last year, we saw one of Frito-Lay’s decked out Tesla Semis at the Super Bowl, and with the Cybertruck having launched in November, it wouldn’t be too surprising to at least see an appearance from the futuristic electric truck at the game.

Three of the commercials from automakers are for EVs this year, while Toyota, perhaps unsurprisingly, is using its ad space to market the new gas Tacoma truck. The others have shared ads for the BMW i5, the Kia EV9 and the Volkswagen ID.Buzz.

And while Tesla may or may not be involved this year, FSD beta critic Dan O’Dowd is, and we’ve also included the two commercials that he purchased with his company The Dawn Project below. The Dawn Project also purchased commercials for the Super Bowl last year.

Below are the 2024 Super Bowl LVIII commercials from BMW, Kia, Toyota, Volkswagen and The Dawn Project.

As Tesla’s holiday update has been rolling out, some users with the Full Self-Driving (FSD) beta have been reporting that the feature has disappeared under the Autopilot menu. Fortunately, the remedy has already been discovered and detailed, and it’s a fairly simple solution.

Multiple users reported the problem to Teslascope, as shared on X on Wednesday morning, noting that toggle options for the FSD beta disappeared once the holiday update was finished installing. According to Teslascope, the problem has been spotted with the rollout of software version 2023.44.30.2, which has been rolling out to a wider audience after Tesla added additional Autopilot safeguards to fix a recall announced last week.

To make the FSD beta toggles reappear, users must simply reboot the vehicle by holding both scroll wheels in until the Tesla logo appears on the screen. This will cause the system to restart, and upon launch, toggle options for the FSD beta will reappear in the appropriate menu, as can be seen below.

Some users in the thread also reported that the reboot didn’t fix the issue, adding that they’re working with Tesla service to find a solution. Another user noted that they were able to search for the term “full” on the Autopilot menu, showing the button again without the need to reboot.

In any case, Tesla will likely roll out another software update that will fix the issue and other minor bugs, though it’s not clear if this issue is on the automaker’s radar as of yet, or when a fix might come through.

At the time of writing, the Teslascope website shows that 2,313 Tesla vehicles have gotten the 2023.44.30.2 update, as hundreds more are awaiting install on their vehicles.

After overseeing the investigation into Tesla’s Autopilot system over the past couple of years, the acting chief of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Ann Carlson, has announced plans to step down.

Carlson has been the regulator’s chief administrator since September 2022, and she emailed employees this week that she would be stepping down in cooperation with a law that limits how long officials can remain in the position, according to a report from Automotive News. NHTSA Deputy Administrator Sophie Shulman will succeed Carlson, who will return to her former position as chief counsel until the end of January before departing the U.S. auto regulator altogether.

Prior to becoming chief counsel for the NHTSA in January 2021, Carlson took a leave of absence from her previous position as one of UCLA’s environmental law professors. Throughout her time at the regulator, Carlson has also been a part of pushing stricter fuel emissions standards for gas vehicles, some of which are set to take effect next year.

Carlson recently noted that the new U.S. fuel economy standards enacted in 2024 “will save consumers money at the pump, increase our energy independence, and reduce harmful pollutants, including the greenhouse gases that cause climate change.”

The announcement of Carlson’s departure comes just after the NHTSA issued a “recall” this week requiring additional Autopilot safeguards, representing the culmination of the agency’s two-year investigation into the advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) that began in August 2021. Following the recall notice, Tesla immediately fixed the issue with the deployment of an over-the-air (OTA) update.

“One of the things we determined is that drivers are not always paying attention when that system is on,” Carlson said following the announcement of the recall.

In response to the recall, Tesla detailed its addition of stricter driver monitoring for Autopilot, writing, “The remedy will incorporate additional controls and alerts to those already existing on affected vehicles to further encourage the driver to adhere to their continuous driving responsibility whenever Autosteer is engaged, which includes keeping their hands on the steering wheel and paying attention to the roadway.”

“Depending on vehicle hardware, the additional controls will include, among others, increasing the prominence of visual alerts on the user interface, simplifying engagement and disengagement of Autosteer, additional checks upon engaging Autosteer and while using the feature outside controlled access highways and when approaching traffic controls, and eventual suspension from Autosteer use if the driver repeatedly fails to demonstrate continuous and sustained driving responsibility while the feature is engaged.”

During her time at the agency, Carlson also focused on airbag safety and an overall goal to decrease traffic deaths, along with the addition of around 50 other safety regulations. In the first nine months of 2023, U.S. traffic deaths dropped roughly 4.5 percent to 30,435 after the agency saw a drastic increase in fatalities during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a statement on Wednesday.

“While we are optimistic that we’re finally seeing a reversal of the record-high fatalities seen during the pandemic, this is not a cause for celebration,” Carlson said.

The NHTSA hasn’t had a Senate-confirmed administrator for most of the last six years. While the Biden administration nominated Carlson to continue serving in the administrator role earlier this year, the White House later withdrew the recommendation following Republican opposition to the decision. Biden has yet to announce a new choice for the position.

Tesla has defended its use of the names “Autopilot” and “self-driving” to a California regulator this week in a continuing case alleging that the titles are false advertising.

After Tesla responded to the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) last year saying that it would defend itself against the claims of false advertising, the automaker this week made a filing arguing that the agency had already approved the use of the terminology.

On Friday, in a filing with the Office of Administrative Hearings, Tesla argued that the California DMV previously and implicitly approved the use of the terminology by not taking action against the automaker in prior investigations (via Reuters). According to the filing, Tesla also faced an investigation from the DMV on its Autopilot name in 2014, which went on to let the automaker keep using the term.

“The DMV chose not to take any action against Tesla or otherwise communicate to Tesla that its advertising or use of these brand names was or might be problematic,” Tesla wrote in the filing.

Tesla also argued it was cleared to use the term “self-driving” in 2016 when the DMV was creating regulations around statements on autonomous technology. The resulting legislation left out previous clauses in DMV drafts that called for the prohibition of the title, which the automaker says was a tacit approval of the language used in its Full Self-Driving (FSD) beta.

“Tesla relied upon Claimant’s implicit approval of these brand names,” Tesla added.

The case could oversee the DMV taking drastic action against Tesla, including the potential of revoking the automaker’s license to sell vehicles in California, which is its largest U.S. market. The agency could also force Tesla to pay restitution to drivers of its vehicles with Autopilot and/or the FSD beta.

In its owner’s manuals, and inside its cars when driving, Tesla notes that Autopilot users are to keep their hands on the wheel at all times and to be ready to regain control of the vehicle.

“Basic Autopilot is a hands-on feature,” Tesla says in the manual. “Keep your hands on the steering wheel at all times and be mindful of road conditions, surrounding traffic, and other road users (such as pedestrians and cyclists). Always be prepared to take immediate action. Failure to follow these instructions could cause damage, serious injury, or death.”

Tesla also provides the following warning in its manual under the FSD beta heading:

“Always remember that Full Self-Driving (Beta) does not make Model 3 autonomous and requires a fully attentive driver who is ready to take immediate action at all times. While Full Self-Driving (Beta) is engaged, you must monitor your surroundings and other road users at all times.”

Despite these warnings, the DMV has previously said that Tesla’s disclaimer “contradicts the original untrue or misleading labels and claims, which is misleading, and does not cure the violation.”

Tesla has received more requests regarding Autopilot and FSD from DOJ

Tesla has highlighted its vast neural network for the Full Self-Driving (FSD) beta, this time as a call to recruitment for people interested in working on the company’s artificial intelligence (AI) team.

On Friday, the Tesla AI page on X shared a post featuring video from the automaker’s vehicles, followed by job listings, including two AI Research Scientist roles, one for the broader foundation models and another for generative modeling within the subject.

In the post, Tesla also writes that “Tesla AI is building next-generation autonomy on a single foundation video network that directly drives the car,” adding that users should “Join the team and build state-of-the-art end-to-end models using massive fleet data on one of the world’s largest training clusters.

The post also shows off 15 separate frames of footage showing front-facing angles from the company’s vehicles, as you can see below.

In addition to the two jobs posted on X, Tesla has several open positions within the Autopilot and Robotics arm of the company listed on its careers website. These listings feature roles such as the Senior Software Engineer for Autopilot AI deployment, the Data Annotation Specialist and Supervisor, the Senior Distributed Storage Engineer, the Senior Software Integration Engineer and many more.

The post also comes ahead of Tesla’s release of the FSD version 12, which is expected to feature end-to-end AI and drop the “beta” moniker, while moving away from the use of several lines of human code to a 99-percent AI system and neural network based on vast amounts of video. Just over a week ago, CEO Elon Musk confirmed that FSD v12 was rolling out to employees with a simple “Yes” response to someone asking about the version on X.

Musk also called the alpha build of the FSD v12 back in August, even going on to call the software “mind-blowing.” In October, the FSD beta program officially surpassed 500 million cumulative miles driven, representing a significant milestone as the system continues to improve as its AI is trained on real-world data.

Update 12/3/23: Corrected to say that the FSD beta surpassed 500 million cumulative miles in October, after incorrectly writing that it had surpassed 500,000 miles.
