Tesla Roadster details were among the sought-after questions during the company’s Earnings Call on Wednesday night, but they were once again given a cryptic walkaround by CEO Elon Musk and other executives with no true end in sight.

The Roadster has been delayed on numerous occasions. Although Tesla has a valid reason for it by stating that other vehicles and projects that help contribute to the company’s overall mission are more of a priority, the Roadster is still something that fans and owners have been requesting for years.

Tesla has had no problem putting production dates and delivery timelines together in the past, hinting that the vehicle will be built “next year” or “by the end of” a given date. In reality, these were all puffery, and last night, this continued as Tesla thanked those who were being patient but still did not put a firm idea in the minds of those waiting for the car.

Musk said:

“I’d like to thank our long-suffering deposit holders. The Roadster is not just the cherry on the cake but also the icing on the cake. We’re close to finalizing the design.”

Of course, a car capable of 0-60 MPH in 1.9 seconds and the supposed hovering capabilities is all that Musk said it was. But in reality, it is time to put a definitive date on this project, stop with the nonsense, and say something like, “It’s delayed until further notice. We have other things that are more important.”

Last night’s update was sort of along these lines, which is acceptable. However, based on the company’s focus on other projects, Roadster updates should be barred until something can be legitimately shown.

Nevertheless, Musk still said that the design is being finalized and that it will have some kind of hovering capability once again:

“We are finalizing the design of [the Tesla Roadster] now. It will be something spectacular. My friend Peter Thiel was lamenting we don’t have flying cars. Well…more to come.”

This is all great. But people have put deposits down on this vehicle, and they have been waiting for something that simply is not in Tesla’s immediate plans. It’s not in production, and to be frank, we hear every year that it will be coming soon. Last night was the first time there was any sort of transparency regarding the fact that it will be delayed and there was no “next year” statement.

In May 2023, he said production would begin by the end of 2024.

That won’t happen.

In February 2024, Musk said the vehicle would be unveiled by the end of the year, and Tesla would aim to ship in 2025.

Nothing has really changed in the grand scheme of things: Tesla said in January, a month before Musk spouted these details, that next-gen platform would be the focus. There was no problem with saying it early this year, and now it’s delayed again.

Elon Musk sets Tesla Roadster unveiling to the end of 2024

Tesla totally should prioritize next-gen, mass-market models to push deliveries and margins upward, helping bolster its strength on Wall Street and appeal to investors.

Until it’s actually ready, which it won’t be for several years, there should be nothing more said about it.

Elon Musk has confirmed that Tesla would be focusing on the next-generation Roadster as the company’s dedicated flagship halo car. The Tesla Model S Plaid Plus, which was canceled before the Model S Plaid’s unveiling event in 2021, will remain canceled.

Musk’s comment was posted on social media platform X as a response to a Tesla community member who inquired if there will ever be a Model S Plaid Plus that will be released, or if the company would simply be focusing its efforts on the next-generation Roadster. In his response, Musk noted that the next-generation Roadster would fill the void left by the Model S Plaid Plus.

It would not be inaccurate to state that Tesla’s lineup today lacks a flagship halo car, a vehicle that is designed to compete at the highest levels of automotive performance. This vehicle was expected to be the next-generation Roadster, but amidst its delays, it appeared for some time that the Model S Plaid Plus would be Tesla’s halo car — at least temporarily.

The specs of the Model S Plaid Plus hinted at its halo car status. It was listed with a 0-60 mph time of 1.99 seconds, the same as the next-generation Roadster. It was also listed with 1,100 horsepower and a range of 520 miles per charge. But while the Model S Plaid Plus was exciting, Elon Musk announced before the regular Model S Plaid’s first delivery event that the Plaid Plus variant was being canceled. This, Musk noted, was because the “Plaid is just so good.”

Such a statement was certainly true when the Model S Plaid was first delivered to customers in June 2021, but the story has become very different today. Amidst the arrival of halo cars like the $250,000 Lucid Air Sapphire, which boasts 1,234 horsepower and a 0-60 mph time of 1.89 seconds, the Tesla Model S Plaid has lost its crown as the electric vehicle sector’s smackdown against combustion cars.

Of course, there is still no car that can match the Model S Plaid’s performance at its starting price of $89,990, but it is undeniable that it is no longer the best and fastest car that the electric vehicle sector can offer. For drivers who are looking for the ultimate EV regardless of budget, cars like the $2.2 million Rimac Nevera or the $250,000 Lucid Air Sapphire are better options.

With this in mind, Tesla does seem to be in need of a flagship, halo car that simply demonstrates just how far ahead the company is compared to its rivals. The next-generation Tesla Roadster seems to fit this bill, especially considering Musk’s previous comments stating that the upcoming all-electric supercar would be a collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX, his space exploration company.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk shared a quick update on the next-gen Roadster during the Q2 2024 earnings call. As per the chief executive, most of the vehicle’s engineering has been completed, but there are still some upgrades that Tesla would like to include in the upcoming all-electric supercar. He also noted that Tesla is looking to start the production of the next-generation Roadster next year.

“With respect to Roadster, we’ve completed most of the engineering. And I think there’s still some upgrades we want to make to it, but we expect to be in production with Roadster next year. It will be something special. Like the whole thing might be,” Musk said in response to an investor question at the Q2 2024 earnings call.

When the next-generation Roadster was unveiled with the Tesla Semi in late 2017, the vehicle was announced with a 0-60 mph time of 1.99 seconds, a top speed of over 250 mph, and a range of 620 miles per charge, thanks to a 200 kWh battery pack. Later comments from Musk hinted at a “SpaceX Package” for the all-electric supercar, which would bring even more performance.

That was over six years ago. The Tesla Semi, the vehicle unveiled at the same time as the next-generation Roadster, has been in limited production since late 2022. The specs of the Roadster, such as its 1.99-second 0-60 mph time, has been achieved by the Tesla Model S Plaid. Other high-performance cars like the Lucid Air Sapphire have even exceeded the next-generation Roadster’s 1.99-second 0-60 mph time.

Considering how late the next-generation Roadster has become, Tesla would have to ensure that the all-electric supercar is something special. Elon Musk hinted as much in a previous comment on X, when he stated that the next-generation Roadster will be an actual collaboration with SpaceX. He also stated that Tesla is targeting a sub-1-second 0-60 mph time for the upcoming vehicle.

This, Musk noted, is to highlight the halo status of the next-generation Roadster. “It would also obviously be ridiculous for the Roadster to achieve simply the same 0-60 mph time as Model S, even though it is a 2 door fully performance-oriented vehicle,” Musk said.

A rare piece of Tesla history is up for auction, and it will likely fetch a very notable price among automotive enthusiasts and collectors. The vehicle, a 2011 Tesla Roadster Performance Package Development Mule, is the only one of its kind that can be purchased today. In fact, this is the first time that such a vehicle could even be bought, period.

Back in 2011, Tesla was a much different company. At the time, Tesla was preparing to launch the car that would change the company from a niche electric sports car maker to a fairly mainstream premium EV company. Tesla unveiled the Model S prototype in 2011, so it would not be inaccurate to state that at the time, the company was focusing a lot of its resources on the development of the all-electric premium sedan.

But as could be seen in the 2011 Tesla Roadster Performance Package Development Mule, the Elon Musk-led company was also working on an upgraded version of its first consumer vehicle around the same time. As noted by Cars & Bids, which is currently putting the rare vehicle up for auction, the unreleased development mule features a number of upgrades that cannot be found on any Tesla Roadster that has been sold to date.

Most noticeable is the development mule’s exposed carbon fiber body, which is unique to the vehicle. It is also fitted with Tarox high-performance brakes, a custom anti-lock braking system flash tune developed by Continental, a differential from Holing, and a Bilstein suspension with a custom tune. The development mule is also equipped with an 80 KWh battery pack, which should give the vehicle more than enough range even by today’s standards.

As noted by Cars & Bids in its video for the vehicle, the one-of-one development mule started its life as a Tesla Roadster 2.5 Sport that was damaged in a crash. The vehicle was taken back to Tesla for repair, but the company instead opted to use the vehicle to develop an upgrade to the Roadster, much like the vehicle’s R80 (3.0) upgrade. While the Tesla Roadster R80 (3.0) mostly featured internal upgrades, the development mule was more noticeable due to its exposed carbon fiber body.

Unfortunately for the Tesla Roadster performance mule, it never made it to production and thus, the package was never sold to consumers. Tesla would go on to put its resources into the Model S, which would then become the car that changed the entire idea of what modern electric vehicles can be like. What came next was history, of course, and it includes milestones such as the Model Y becoming the world’s best-selling car by volume in 2023.

Cars & Bids’ listing for the 2011 Tesla Roadster Performance Package Development Mule can be accessed here. A walkthrough of the vehicle can be viewed in the video below.

Tesla’s next-generation Roadster has been widely discussed since Tesla first teased the upcoming car a few years ago. In the latest update about the electric vehicle (EV), CEO Elon Musk notes that it will be able to fly—though it’s not clear yet to what extent.

After Musk teased SpaceX’s involvement in the upcoming Tesla vehicle a few months ago, some suggested that the new Roadster could be developed with aerial capabilities. Most, however, chalked the comments up to the EV just having incredible acceleration speeds, as aided by SpaceX equipment.

In a post on X on Saturday morning, Musk said that the “new Tesla Roadster can fly,” though he didn’t disclose any other details as to whether it would literally be able to be airborne, for how long, or when the forthcoming EV would become available.

When Musk previously alluded to the upcoming Roadster being a collaborative project between Tesla and SpaceX, he said that the completion of the production design and the official unveil could both be expected by the end of this year. When asked during that conversation on X whether the highly-anticipated vehicle would be able to “fly a little,” Musk responded with the eyes emoji.

To be sure, Musk has become well-known for his sometimes overly-ambitious statements, with the CEO previously sharing concepts that didn’t come to fruition, and regularly sharing timelines that end up being delayed. Still, it’s hard to fathom what a collaboration with SpaceX on the next-gen Tesla Roadster would look like, though a flying car may not quite be out of the question.

Musk years ago teased the possibility of hovering capabilities for the next-gen Roadster, though it’s been unclear whether this was hopeful thinking or something that consumers can truly expect to see in the future EV. With his recent statements, it seems the car’s ability to fly may have remained an important piece of the puzzle for Tesla’s design team, among the many other expected features.

The new Roadster is also expected to be able to reach 60 mph in under a second, according to a previous statement from Musk. He also followed the statement up by saying that the incredible acceleration time will be the least interesting thing about the upcoming performance EV.

In an interview in April, Musk also hinted that the Roadster would likely include steer-by-wire, as included in the Cybertruck. He also suggested that the hyper-performance EV could be slated to get a modified steering yoke.

Elon Musk confirmed the Tesla Roadster would include steer-by-wire in an interview with Don Lemon. Based on his wording, it also sounds like a modified Yoke could be on the way as well.

Tesla has been teasing a new Roadster for several years, but Musk seems more willing than ever to commit to the vehicle’s planned production date and some new features that it will equip.

Musk was with Don Lemon for a new interview that dove into everything from how the CEO spends his time off and unloads his stress to the issue of free speech on his social media platform X.

However, Lemon also inquired about potential details surrounding the Tesla Roadster, and Musk was willing to share a few details.

Musk confirmed that the Roadster will be a direct collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX, which we expected based on the company’s claims that the vehicle will be able to hover for a short period of time. Musk said “maybe” to Lemon’s question of whether the vehicle would be a “flying car,” but we knew that Tesla’s goal was for the Roadster to be capable of floating, at least for a few seconds.

However, there were more details that Musk was confidently willing to discuss, including two new features, like steer-by-wire and a new Yoke.

Lemon asked Musk various questions, including whether the Roadster would have wings or wheels. Musk answered these questions, confirming that the vehicle would not have wings and would have wheels, but he also confirmed that it would have “a drive-by-wire Yoke.”

“Kind of like the way aircraft or modern jets are controlled,” Musk confirmed.

Steer-by-wire is not a new development, but Tesla has just started introducing it on its vehicles. The Cybertruck was the first vehicle to utilize this functionality in the Tesla lineup, and it appears the Roadster will be the next car to equip it.

Tesla Cybertruck: price, range, trims, and specs revealed

In simple terms, steer-by-wire does not require a driver to turn a wheel more than 180 degrees to execute a full turn radius. While traditional rack-and-pinion steering systems require more than a full 360-degree wheel spin to have a vehicle turn fully, steer-by-wire helps the wheels turn more with less effort from the driver.

In late February, Musk teased the Roadster’s new unveiling date for the end of 2024. Of course, we’ve all heard that the Roadster will be delivered in the past, and Tesla has not followed through on these dates, so we cannot confirm whether it will actually be available by the time 2025 rolls around.

However, Musk said there are “radically increased design goals” for the Roadster in the late February X post.

Elon Musk has said a lot of crazy things about the new Tesla Roadster over the years. From its alleged rocket technology to its capability to fly for short “hops,” Musk’s comments about the upcoming all-electric halo car have been practically fantastical. And in a recent comment, Musk noted that Tesla is targeting an absolutely insane 0-60 mph time with the new Roadster.

When the next-generation Roadster was unveiled back in late 2017 with the Tesla Semi, Elon Musk announced that it would be a vehicle with a 0-60 mph time of 1.9 seconds. At the time, such figures were already insane, but they were achieved several years later by the much larger and much heavier Tesla Model S Plaid, which could perform a 1.99-second 0-60 mph run under ideal conditions.

With the Model S Plaid achieving the 2017 next-gen Roadster’s 1.9-second 0-60 mph time, Tesla’s estimates for the Roadster became more ambitious. When the upcoming all-electric supercar was featured at the Petersen Auto Museum, for example, Tesla’s plaque for the vehicle noted that with the SpaceX Package, the new Roadster was expected to achieve a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 1.1 seconds.

Musk’s recent updates on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, indicated that Tesla now has even more ambitious performance targets. As per Musk, the new Roadster would have a 0-60 mph time of less than 1 second. But even more interestingly, such performance would be one of the least interesting parts about the vehicle, Musk noted.

If Tesla does pull off a feat like the next-generation Roadster, it will establish Tesla as an automaker that makes cars that seem impossible possible. Sub-1-second 0-60 mph times are within the realm of top fuel dragsters already, after all, and those are nowhere close to actual production cars. As per Auto Express, the fastest 0-60 mph time for production cars as of early 2024 goes to the 1,011 bhp Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170, whose farewell is marked with an impressive 0-60 mph time of 1.66 seconds.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently shared a number of notable updates for the next-generation Roadster. Apart from stating that Tesla is aiming to unveil the upcoming all-electric supercar later this year, Musk also provided some interesting tidbits about the vehicle. Among these is the fact that the new Roadster would be the product of Musk’s two largest companies — Tesla and SpaceX.

The new Roadster has been pushed far back in the company’s list of projects for years. Initially unveiled in late 2017 during the Tesla Semi’s unveiling, the Roadster was announced with a target availability date of 2020. The year came and went, of course, and the next-generation Roadster has mostly been forgotten, especially with Tesla getting busy with the Cybertruck.

But with the Cybertruck now being produced and the company now working on its next-generation platform, it would appear that Tesla is finally ready to work on releasing the new Roadster. Over the years, Musk’s comments about the vehicle have become wilder, with the CEO noting that the supercar should be able to fly for short “hops” due to a dedicated SpaceX package that would incorporate rocket tech in the car.

Musk’s recent tweets about the new Roadster suggest that the CEO has not abandoned his wild dreams for Tesla’s halo car. As per Musk, Tesla has radically increased the design goals for the next-generation Roadster. He also noted that there will never be another car like the new Roadster — if the vehicle could even be called a car. This was because the next-generation Roadster is the product of a Tesla-SpaceX collaboration.

In later posts, Musk noted that the new Tesla Roadster’s planned unveiling would have a shot at “being the most mind-blowing product demo of all time.” Musk seems to be keeping the idea that the new Roadster would feature rocket technology, as hinted at by his cheeky response to a Tesla enthusiast who noted that the EV maker is actually making a rocket on wheels. Equally cheeky responses from Musk were posted on a question asking if the new Roadster would be able to fly a little.

While it would be easy to discount Elon Musk’s recent round of updates for the new Tesla Roadster as the typical overly-optimistic musings of the CEO, it should be noted that Tesla did just bring the Cybertruck — a vehicle that critics argued would never get released — into production. The Cybertruck is as wild as they come, and Tesla is now delivering it to consumers. If Tesla could pull off the Cybertruck, then it would not be surprising if Tesla delivers on the new Roadster as well.

In a recent announcement, Elon Musk revealed plans to unveil the highly anticipated Tesla Roadster at the end of 2024, marking another milestone in the company’s journey towards revolutionizing the electric vehicle (EV) industry.

The Roadster holds a special place in the hearts of Tesla enthusiasts as the vehicle that kickstarted the company’s remarkable journey towards electrifying the automotive landscape. First introduced in 2008, the Tesla Roadster quickly gained acclaim for its cutting-edge technology, blistering performance, and sleek design. Over a decade later, Tesla is poised to redefine the boundaries of automotive excellence with the next-generation Roadster.

Details surrounding the specifications and features of the next-generation Tesla Roadster remain closely guarded. However, based on Musk’s penchant for pushing the boundaries of innovation, enthusiasts can expect the new Roadster to boast groundbreaking advancements in performance, range, and technology.

Tesla has come far since the last Roadster was in production, specifically in battery technology. Its 4680 cell has changed the range game in a few of its latest vehicles, including the Telsa Cybertruck. Besides battery tech advancements, Tesla has greatly improved its production lines thanks to the Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck.

The next-gen Roadster was unveiled in 2017 during the Tesla Semi launch. Roadster reservation holders have been waiting patiently for quite a long time but will likely have to wait a bit more before Tesla starts next-gen Roadster production and then deliveries.

BYD launched a new high-performance electric supercar under the Yangwang brand on Sunday, and the U9, as it has been named, will rival the brands of Ferrari and Lamborghini and, eventually, the Tesla Roadster.

The U9 was unveiled on Sunday in China, the market where it will be exclusively offered, at least at first. Deliveries are planned for mid-2024.

It has white-knuckle speed and acceleration, with 0-62 MPH in just 2.36 seconds, and a top speed of 192.12 MPH, or 309.19 km/h. It is also set to pack a variety of interesting features, including air suspension that will enable a plethora of dance modes:

Bloomberg first reported the unveiling, which was live-streamed from Shanghai on Sunday.

BYD is now the world’s largest EV maker in terms of volume after overtaking Tesla last year. It mainly sells ultra-affordable EVs under its own name, but it has luxury brands that it markets other vehicles under, including Yangwang and Fang Cheng Bao.

BYD executive dubs Tesla a “very respected industry peer” amid EV transition

The U9 is set to rival both the gas and electric offerings of Ferrari and Lamborghini, but it will also be a suitable competitor to the Tesla Roadster, which has been delayed on several occasions.

When the Roadster will come out is anyone’s guess, but CEO Elon Musk said last week that every concept car it unveils would be built, reassuring those who have placed tens of thousands of dollars in deposits on the vehicle that it will eventually be available.
